The Belgian Council of Ministers has officially approved a ban on all e-cigarette flavors, restricting sales to only tobacco and unflavored options starting September 1, 2028. Driven by Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke, the legislation aims to protect youth from appealing flavors that mask harmful substances and encourage addiction.
The decision follows urgent recommendations from the Superior Health Council (CSS), which prioritized youth protection over adult taste preferences. Recent tests have also revealed that some flavored vapes contain dangerous substances, including pesticides and lead.
By implementing this ban, Belgium is harmonizing its public health policies with neighboring countries to prevent cross-border vape purchases. The government is heavily relying on data from the Netherlands, where a similar flavor restriction is already active.
Evaluations of the Dutch flavor ban demonstrate significant public health benefits:
- Two in five users report vaping less frequently.
- 22 percent of users have stopped vaping completely.
With smoking-related consequences claiming nearly two lives per hour in Belgium, the country has rapidly intensified its anti-tobacco efforts. This upcoming flavor restriction builds upon Belgium's recent first-in-Europe ban on disposable vapes, signaling a strict regulatory shift that could soon influence the rest of the EU.
