Austria's National Council has passed legislation to ban disposable vapes, setting an expiration date for these single-use products by the end of the year. The ban, which follows a petition by environmental group GLOBAL 2000 that gathered 12,000 signatures, aims to curb electronic waste and prevent hazardous fires in waste facilities.
Environmental advocates warn that the current legal definition of a disposable e-cigarette remains vague. International precedents show manufacturers often bypass sales bans through minor product modifications. GLOBAL 2000 is calling for strict enforcement and clear rules to ensure "pseudo-reusable" vapes do not enter the market.
Disposable vapes represent a severe misuse of raw materials. The lithium-ion batteries inside these devices regularly cause fires in garbage trucks and recycling plants when discarded incorrectly. Austria currently generates 803 kg of waste per capita annually, placing it among the highest waste-producing nations in Europe.
To curb this high resource consumption, environmental groups are urging the Austrian government to introduce a circular economy law, ban fast fashion, and reinstate repair bonuses for electronic devices.
