British American Tobacco (BAT) has initiated a sweeping global restructuring drive to eliminate approximately 9,000 jobs. This major organizational shake-up, revealed via an internal company notice, comes as the tobacco giant grapples with declining global cigarette volumes and accelerates its pivot toward smoke-free nicotine alternatives.
The workforce reduction represents nearly one-fifth of BAT's 47,000 employees outside its US business. The transition is driven by structural pressures, including a projected 2% contraction in global cigarette industry volumes for 2026, forcing tobacco companies to redirect capital toward products positioned for adult smokers seeking alternatives.
To illustrate the scale of BAT's operational overhaul, the key targets and restructuring metrics are detailed below:
| Metric / Initiative | Target & Details |
|---|---|
| Total Job Impact | 9,000 roles (approx. 20% of non-US workforce) |
| Positions Eliminated | 5,500 roles by the end of 2026 |
| Roles Outsourced | 3,500 roles transferred to external partners |
| Annual Cost Savings | £600 million ($793 million) by the end of 2028 |
| Revenue Target | Over 50% of revenue from non-combustible products |
This transition mirrors a broader industry shift led by competitors like Philip Morris International. BAT has set ambitious goals for its non-combustible portfolio, focusing heavily on its Vuse vaping devices and Velo nicotine pouches.
To achieve its steep savings targets, BAT is increasingly relying on automation, artificial intelligence, and global outsourcing. Interim Chief Financial Officer Javed Iqbal previously noted that AI and data analytics would significantly reshape staffing requirements, helping secure roughly £500 million of the targeted savings by 2027.
Additionally, BAT has expanded its outsourcing partnerships with Accenture, shifting service operations across the UK, Singapore, Costa Rica, Mexico, Poland, Romania, and Malaysia. This follows other aggressive cost-cutting measures, including the January closure of its South African cigarette factory due to mounting pressures from illicit trade.
"These changes affect many of our colleagues, and we are focused on supporting them through this transition with care and respect, as we position the business for the future," said Chief Executive Officer Tadeu Marroco.
