The Welsh Parliament, known as the Senedd, has approved a ban on the sale of disposable vapes in Wales, set to take effect from June 1, 2025. Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies hailed the decision as a significant step towards addressing the throwaway culture and the environmental consequences of single-use vapes.
UK-Wide Coordination for Simultaneous Implementation
The Welsh government is collaborating closely with ministers across all UK nations to ensure the ban comes into force simultaneously. This means that from June 1, 2025, businesses will no longer be permitted to sell or distribute single-use vapes free of charge in Wales.
To prepare for the upcoming ban, the Welsh government encourages businesses to engage with their suppliers about sourcing alternative products, educate their staff, and inform customers about the impending change. Additionally, businesses will be responsible for arranging the safe disposal of single-use vapes for their customers.
Concerns Over Vaping's Appeal to Non-Smokers and Illegal Market
The Welsh government's announcement in October followed a similar move by the UK government to prohibit the sale of disposable vapes in England from June 2025. The Scottish government initially planned to introduce the ban in April but postponed it by two months to align with England and Wales.
Concerns have arisen regarding the growing appeal of vaping among non-smokers in the UK. Scientists estimated that by October of this year, the number of adults in England who had started vaping despite never having been regular smokers had reached one million.
Furthermore, there are worries that the ban might contribute to the already expanding black market for illegal vapes, which can contain higher nicotine levels. Earlier this year, Swansea council reported seizing more than 140,000 illegal vapes within a matter of months.
