French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has announced a decisive crackdown on disposable vapes, known as "puffs," addressing growing concerns about youth addiction and environmental impact. Speaking exclusively to RTL in Focus Dimanche, Borne confirmed the government will implement this ban as part of France's national anti-smoking strategy.
Understanding the Puff Phenomenon
Each disposable vape delivers approximately 600 puffs, equivalent to an entire pack of cigarettes. Despite their innocent appearance and name meaning "breath" in English, these devices pack a significant nicotine punch. Manufacturers target young consumers with attractive colors and ice cream-inspired flavors like watermelon and frozen lychee.
Youth Addiction Concerns
The Alliance Against Tobacco reports alarming statistics: 13% of French teenagers aged 13-16 have already experimented with puffs. The devices' affordability, costing up to 10 euros less than traditional cigarette packs, makes them particularly accessible to young people. Prime Minister Borne emphasizes these devices create dangerous habits that lead to tobacco addiction among youth.
Environmental Impact
Beyond health concerns, puffs pose significant environmental challenges. These single-use devices contain plastic, aluminum, and lithium components, contributing to growing waste management issues.
