European travelers planning to vape on their holidays are being urged to check local laws before they travel, as regulations in popular international hotspots can range from hefty fines to potential imprisonment. As vaping rules tighten globally, what is permissible at home may be strictly illegal abroad, leading to serious consequences for uninformed tourists.
One of the most popular destinations with severe restrictions is Thailand. E-cigarettes are completely illegal across the entire country. This includes not only using them but also bringing them into the country. Airport officials frequently check luggage and will confiscate any vape devices found. Tourists caught possessing or using a vape in Thailand can face on-the-spot fines or even be arrested and face prison time. The UK Foreign Office explicitly warns its citizens of these strict rules.
Other popular long-haul destinations also have stringent regulations. In Singapore, anyone found possessing or using a vape can be fined up to SGD $2,000 (approximately £1,150 / €1,350). In Mexico, the sale of vapes is generally banned, and travelers have reported having their devices confiscated by customs officials upon arrival at the airport.
Vaping Rules Within Europe
Even within Europe, the rules are not uniform and are becoming stricter. Several countries have implemented or are considering bans on disposable vapes, following a trend set by the UK's ban effective June 1, 2025.
- In France and Belgium, bans on the sale of disposable vapes are already in place.
- In Spain, vaping is prohibited on many popular beaches, including those in Barcelona and Benidorm, with potential fines reaching up to €750. The Balearic Islands also feature numerous smoke-free beaches.
- The Canary Islands have been considering proposals to ban smoking and potentially vaping on outdoor bar and restaurant terraces, at bus stop shelters, and near entrances to schools and hospitals.
General Advice for Traveling Vapers:
Before you travel, it is essential to research the specific laws of your destination country and any transit locations.
- Check Legality:Â Confirm if vaping is legal, restricted, or completely banned. Some countries prohibit the importation of any vape products.
- Airline Rules:Â If permitted, always pack vape devices and batteries in your carry-on luggage, never in checked bags, due to airline safety regulations regarding lithium-ion batteries.
- Be Respectful:Â Even where legal, be mindful of local customs and avoid vaping in crowded public spaces, near children, or where signage indicates it is prohibited.
By staying informed, European travelers can avoid significant fines, confiscation of their property, or more severe legal trouble, ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday.
